A very successful drug and alcohol rehab program is coming to a community plagued by pill abuse.
Portsmouth is a town that has gained national media attention for its prescription pill abuse problem.
With the shutdown of several pill mills, the demand of rehabilitation is on the rise, which is why when Paul Vernier saw a problem, he opened a rehab center in Ironton.
He is now opening a new office in the heart of Portsmouth.
Vernier is a former addict himself, sober for 16 years and now wanting to help others.
"I needed help to get clean,” he said. “ A place like that does this. I know my motivation."
Scott Kitchen spent time in jail for his drug abuse problem. For him, the program is working.
He's been sober five years.
"It’s good to talk to people who have been through what I have been through,” Kitchen said.
People who are in the program are counseled by people who are in recovery themselves. It’s a successful method experts say creates a high demand for similar programs in the region.
The program offers compassion and understanding to help others get clean, and hopes to change the reputation of one town.
The program also offers counseling services to loved ones of addicts.
