Sutton , Braxton County , West Virginia
A Braxton County mother was charged with child neglect causing death after her son's body was found decomposing and wrapped in a blanket in her home.
Valarie Brown, 38, of Sutton was arrested Wednesday night during a welfare check at her home on Salt Lick Road.
"I don't even understand what is happening in this world anymore, some things. It's really bad," her neighbor Brian White said.
"That poor little boy didn't even get a chance to live," Jessica White said.
State police and a Hospice worker went to the home for a juvenile welfare check, according to the criminal complaint. Brown was outside and told them her 8-year-old son, who neighbors said suffered from a medical condition, was not home.
They insisted they needed to check on him for his well-being and Brown eventually let them in.
Once inside, troopers said she told them, "Please don't hurt L.B." (The boy's initials are being used because he is a juvenile.)
That's when police said they found his body wrapped in a blanket and partially decomposed.
"Did you mean for him to die?" Eyewitness News reporter Leslie Rubin asked as Brown was being taken to jail.
She said she was not allowed to talk when asked questions about her son's death. She seemed shocked when Magistrate Robert Hamil set her bond at $100,000 cash only.
"It has to be $100,000 in cash?" she asked him.
Brown told Hamil she had served time on home confinement for a meth related conspiracy charge, but was now a student at Fairmont State University.
She also has another son, who troopers said was not home when the body was found. Some neighbors were surprised to learn she had two children, saying they have only seen one outside the home.
"My son said there was one kid who rode the bus. I did not realize there was another one in the house," said neighbor Peggy White.
Troopers are expected to release more information Thursday.
A cause of death has not been determined.
A Braxton County woman has been charged after her 8-year-old son was found dead in her home with his decomposing body wrapped in a blanket.
State Police said Valarie Brown, 38, of Sutton was arrested Wednesday night at her home on Salt Lick Road and charged with child neglect resulting in death.
Hospice went to check on the child at Brown’s residence because the child had a medical condition. State Police accompanied Hospice, and said the child’s body was found at the home. They say the boy was wrapped in a blanket and his body was partially decomposing.
Troopers said Brown told them "please don't hurt L.B." when they entered the home. L.B. are the boy's initials, being used to protect his identity because he is a minor.
Brown was being held at the Central Regional Jail in Sutton.
Magistrate Robert Hamil set her bond at $100,000 cash.
