Alleged sexual assaults and other problems at a West Virginia juvenile correctional facility are prompting a judge to order its shutdown.
Judge Omar Aboulhosn wants the residents at the Harriet B. Jones Treatment Center moved by Sept. 30. He ruled during a Wednesday hearing in Kanawha Circuit Court.
The Harrison County facility holds 21 juvenile sex offenders and seven youths with behavioral issues. A correctional officer testified that an older offender allegedly sexually assaulted a younger resident this weekend, while the center was short-staffed. Testimony also alleged one officer sexually assaulted another officer.
The center is on the campus of the former Industrial Home for Youth. The judge is considering a lawsuit filed over conditions there, which is leading the state to convert that facility into an adult prison.
