West Virginia health centers have been selected to receive more than $2.5 million in grant awards to enroll the uninsured in new health coverage options made available by the Affordable Care Act.
Health centers in the area selected and the amount of the grant awards include Valley Health Systems Inc. in Huntington, more than $229,000; WomenCare Inc. in Scott Depot, more than $121,000; Cabin Creek Health Systems in Dawes, more than $108,000; and Roane Family Health Care in Spencer, $54,000, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
In West Virginia, 27 health centers operating 224 sites served 382,182 patients last year, 24 percent of whom were uninsured. With these funds, the grant recipients expect to hire 53 additional workers who will assist 61,264 West Virginians with enrollment into affordable health insurance coverage. Across the nation, 1,159 health centers will receive $150 million in grant awards.
With these awards, health centers will help consumers understand their coverage options in the new health insurance marketplace. They will also help determine an individual’s eligibility for Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program; any financial help they can get; and enroll them in new affordable health coverage options.
Wednesday’s announcement is part of the administration's larger effort to make applying for health coverage as easy as possible. The new, consumer-focused website and the 24-hour-a-day consumer call center are available to help West Virginians prepare for open enrollment and ultimately sign up for health coverage. These new tools will help West Virginians understand their coverage options and select the plan that best suits their needs when open enrollment in the new health insurance marketplace begins Oct. 1.
