With summer in full swing and a number of construction projects slated, the Charleston Urban Renewal Authority had a lot to discuss Wednesday.
The East End Park construction project and conversion of the Kyle Furniture building were two of many topics up for discussion at CURA's monthly meeting.
Developers want to convert the Kyle Furniture building located on Smith Street into lofts and commercial space.
William Turner, president of Pison Developments LLC, told CURA he plans to add 15 units, a penthouse and a parking garage to accommodate future residents.
Turner needed a variance from commissioners to build the garage space in the rear of those buildings, along with design approval. Commissioners voted in favor of both, but Turner must return to the group with a more specific design once he meets with city leaders.
The two bedroom, two bathroom units units start at $250,000. The units are 1,100 to 1,500 square feet.
Commissioners also discussed the status of the East End Community Park and Trail on Charleston's Dixie Street.
Jim Edwards, CURA'S executive director, said construction for the park is on target. As part of the first phase, the main entrance arch has been installed and the landscape is being put into place.
Edwards said there hasn't been any setbacks so far.
"It's going quite well," Edwards said. "The construction has been very good on the job, and really it's been constructed more quickly than we expect."
The second phase will feature a walking and jogging trail. The park is expected to open to the public in late August.
