A little girl from Mason County will spend her first birthday in the hospital, fighting a potentially deadly diagnosis.
Katelyn “Katie” Smith was diagnosed with opsaclonus myoclonus neuroblastoma earlier this year, family member April Young said. On Katelyn’s spine, doctors found a tumor that covers four of her vertebrae, Young said.
Katelyn received her first chemotherapy treatment July 2 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. Paul and Joni Smith, Katelyn’s parents, are staying at the Morgantown hospital while she receives treatments.
Even though family members are about four hours away from home, residents in their community are coming together to help them the only way they now how – by praying and raising money.
A hot dog and bake sale will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Leon Elementary School in Leon for Katelyn’s family. There also will be raffles, a gospel sing and a silent auction, according to the Katelyn Smith Benefit and Raffles page for the toddler here
Meanwhile, a benefit dinner is planned from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. July 20 at the Leon Baden Community Building on Route 87 in Leon. Learn more here
Katelyn’s medical treatments will likely cost thousands of dollars. Young said the family does have insurance, but still has to pay 20 percent of the bills.
Katelyn will turn 1 year old, just a day before the first benefit is scheduled to take place.
