Charleston Police have upped their presence on the East End after a string of break-ins.
"This is a problem in small towns, in middle sized town, in cities, as well as in large urban areas," Amy Wientraub said.
Wientraub has lived on Charleston's East End for 14 years and said crime has always been an issue.
"We've always has issues with things left on porches and in yards being stolen," Wientraub said, "We've always had an issued with unlocked cars being invaded."
But in recent weeks the criminal activity has picked up.
Police say thieves have targeted several cars and homes, breaking in and stealing whatever they can find.
"They're actually targeting copper wiring," Lt. Steve Cooper with Charleston Police said. "But anything that's left loose or in plain sight like a vehicle is a potential target."
Cooper said the newest crime trend on the East End has been homes for sale or that seem to be empty.
"It's frustrating because there's so little you can do as a homeowner," Wientraub said.
And to ease the frustration, Charleston Police have upped patrol in the East End area hoping to find whomever is responsible and stop them.
Charleston police say to keep you from being the next victim to these thieves it's important to make sure doors to your home and car are locked; don't leave anything in plain sight; and if you have a porch light to have it on at night.
And if you have any information concerning these break-ins, call 911.
