GROUNDHOGS TAKE BLAMEfrom Eyewitness News Online Groundhogs Under Fire For Late Spring Reported by: Web Producer: Heath Harrison Also Contributing: Brandon Stover Reported: Mar. 22, 2013 10:58 PM EDT Updated: Mar. 22, 2013 11:36 PM EDT

According to the calendar, spring has sprung, but winter is still hanging on. Some people are mad, and they're looking for someone to blame. Tempers are flaring at the very un-spring like temperatures. The frigid weather is causing many to search for someone to blame, a spring-stealing scapegoat, or, in this case, a groundhog. Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring. Now he's coming under fire. "I woke up this morning and the wind was blowing, the snow was flying, the temperatures were falling, and I said, ‘Punxsutawney, you let us down,'" said Butler County, Ohio Prosecutor Michael Gmoser. Gmoser has drawn up an indictment accusing Phil of "the offense of misrepresentation of early spring." That's a felony, and he aims to bring the critter to justice. “Since he's already serving a life sentence behind bars, as you know, there wasn't much left as far as a penalty, other than the death sentence," Butler said. Our own French Creek Freddie made the same prediction here in West Virginia. Does he have anything to worry about? “French Creek Freddie provided us with a false weather report,” said Kanawha County Prosecutor Mark Plants. “I've been in communication with law enforcement and the Upshur County prosecuting office. We’re trying to find out if, jurisdictionally, we can indict.” French Creek Freddie may soon be a fugitive from justice, so he doesn't suffer a similar fate as Punxsutawney, who probably won't be showing his face until spring has sprung. --The Butler County prosecutor and Mark Plants are just playing along with frustrations of this chilly spring weather we've been having. We can assure you that no animals were hurt during the production of this story. MORE NEWS FROM EYEWITNESS NEWS
