With the pepperoni roll moving toward becoming the official state food of West Virginia, U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin said it is a worthy contender.
This week, delegates introduced a resolution that would make the pepperoni roll, which was created in the north central part of the Mountain State, the official food of West Virginia.
A Fairmont baker is credited with inventing it around 1927, as a meal option for coal miners.
Manchin, a Democrat who hails from that area, said he has fond memories of munching on pepperoni rolls while he was growing up.
“It's something I grew up with you know in Fairmont and Farmington . . . my area,” Manchin said. “It was a staple that we all used. It was our fast food as kids. That being said, you know it's the legislative process. They have the prerogative to do that. I would hope they would consider spaghetti and meatballs, also.”
Lawmakers have moved the pepperoni roll ahead of other contenders for the title of official state food, which include slaw hot dogs, ramps and Tudor's biscuits.
A final vote on the resolution hasn't been scheduled.
