Authorities said homes near Cameron in Marshall County were briefly evacuated after a natural gas pipeline ruptured, but there was no fire, no property damage and no injuries. Williams Partners owns the line. Spokesman Scott Carney said an 8- to 10-foot-long section of 24-inch-diameter line ruptured Friday afternoon, but the company immediately shut down the line and isolated the area. The force of the explosion unearthed the pipe. The gas was shut off and people in the three- to four-mile evacuation zone were allowed to return home. Carney told media outlets the cause of the rupture is under investigation. In December, a 20-inch line owned by Columbia Gas Transmission ruptured near Sissonville, triggering a massive fire that cooked a section of Interstate 77. A 36-inch natural gas pipeline exploded in Marshall County Friday afternoon, forcing an evacuation of the area. No injuries were reported in the incident that occurred about 12:15 p.m. in a rural area about three to four miles south of Cameron off U.S. Route 250 near the West Virginia-Pennsylvania border, Marshall County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Bill Helms said. Helms said the sheriff's department received about 30 calls after the explosion, and the area around the pipeline was evacuated. He believes the gas was turned off within 20 minutes. Kathy Cosco, communications director for the state Department of Environmental Protection, said a three-mile area was evacuated. Helms said residents would be allowed to return to their homes as soon as the gas dissipated.
