U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va, is still working on his version of a bill which would mandate background checks for certain people interested in purchasing firearms.
Proposals were made in the wake of various mass shootings to put stricter restrictions on gun laws.
Manchin said an effort to ban certain types of assault weapons, like the one used in the Newtown, Conn. school shooting, had no chance of passing.
“I was opposed to that,” Manchin said. “That was going nowhere.”
Manchin said it's reasonable to check on certain people who want to buy a gun.
“The bottom line is we don't have people with expertise. Our bill puts a commission on mass violence. It looks at the culture of violence,” Manchin said. “The background check for mental and criminal background checks is one that I believe that people understand. It's something that I believe would help us immensely in keeping the guns out of the wrong people's hands.”
