The former treasurer of two Kanawha County organizations who embezzled thousands of dollars from the groups was sentenced Thursday to two years of probation.
Ethel Andrews was sentenced by Kanawha Circuit Judge Carrie Webster. In addition to the probation, she also must do 80 hours of community service and repay the money she embezzled at the rate of $200 per month. She also is prohibited from participating in sweepstakes activities.
Andrews is the former treasurer of the Institute Volunteer Fire Department and the Kanawha Valley chapter of the alumni association at West Virginia State University. She embezzled $24,300 from the fire department and $34,800 from the alumni association.
Authorities said after Andrews embezzled the money, she became the victim of a mail scam apparently from Jamaica, and she lost all of the embezzled money. She also lost $150,000 of her personal funds in the mail scam. Andrews used the money because she believed she had the chance to be awarded millions of dollars.
The two counts of embezzlement each carried the possible sentence of one to 10 years in prison.
