The longtime principal of a Kanawha County high school returned to work Monday after being suspended last week. Capital High School Principal Clinton Giles was at work Monday, Kanawha County Schools Assistant Superintendent Mark Milam said. Sources told Eyewitness News that Giles was suspended by Kanawha County Schools Superintendent Ron Duerring last week. Details of the suspension have not been released. The longtime principal at Capital High School is reportedly off the job, at least for now. Capital High School students and parents were in suspense when news broke that Principal Clinton Giles had been suspended. “I’m surprised,” Capital parent Lorie Henley said. “I haven't heard anything. I want to know what's going on." Earlier this week, Kanawha County Schools Superintendent Ron Duerring suspended Giles from his job as Capital's principal. Sources at the school board said the punishment is centered around a disagreement over a student's admission into the National Honor Society. Isaac Conely, a 2006 Capital graduate, said he is well aware of Giles' tendency to push the boundaries. "There's always controversy with him throughout past years, before and after I was there,” Conely said. “This isn't a one-time occurrence. I hear about this every so often. Every couple years or so, I hear the fact that he's in trouble." Earlier this school year, Giles stopped the practice of students saying the pledge of allegiance. Last May, he initially barred 21 students from participating in graduation ceremonies because they wore unauthorized T-shirts to school. The Kanawha County School Board stepped in and the ban was later reversed. And before that incident, the board resolved a situation with Giles restricting racy dancing at the school's prom. Years of controversy are now possibly coming to an end, as the fate of Giles's job is up in the air. "You know he can't make those decisions,” Conely said. “If the board says he's to do something, he should do it." Eyewitness News has learned that Capital High School Principal Clinton Giles has been suspended. Although we have not confirmed the reason for the suspension or its length, sources tell Eyewitness News the decision was made late this week. Calls to Capital High School were directed to the Kanawha County Board of Education. Board member Pete Thaw declined to comment. Kanawha County Superintendent Ron Duerring did not return calls asking for comment. Eyewitness News contacted Giles, and he declined to comment. According to Capital High School's website, Giles is serving his ninth year as principal. Prior to that, he was Capital's assistant principal for 13 years.
