U.S. Sens. Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin, along with state Division of Culture and History Commissioner Randall Reid-Smith, have been recognized for their commitment to West Virginia music education programs.
The three were honored at a ceremony Wednesday in Washington, D.C. by the VH1 Save The Music Foundation, the National Association of Music Merchants and the National Association for Music Education.
The nonprofit VH1 foundation has provided more than $1 million for music education in 35 schools in 30 counties. Smith says that will expand to 45 schools in 36 counties this year.
Among those performing at the ceremony was the Shepherdstown Middle School Jazz Band. The band received instruments from the VH1 foundation and has since won a state jazz band competition.
