The state auction on the wandering water buffalo, Gus and Millie, closed Thursday with the highest final price offered at $1,000. According to information posted on the state’s website, publicsurplus.com, 50 bids were placed during the auction that started Aug. 22. The first offer was $100. State officials could not be reached for comment to provide further details about the winning bidder and what the plans are for the animals. Under the terms established by the state, the winning bidder has to transport the buffalo. Millie, the cow, weighs about 1,100 pounds and is estimated to be between 5 to 6 years old. The male bull calf, Gus, weighs about 375 pounds and is between 6 and 9 months old. The two water buffalo were transported by West Virginia Department of Agriculture officials in February to be with the herd kept at the Lakin Correctional Center in Mason County. The animals had been hanging around a resident's yard in Jackson County before they were moved to Lakin. The West Virginia Department of Agriculture moved the buffaloes, named Millie and Gus, to the herd they keep at the Lakin Correctional Center. The cow and the male calf now have a barn and a nice large yard for them to stretch their legs. Buddy Davidson from the West Virginia Department of Agriculture said it took a bit of time to get them in. "It took a little bit of time to get this animal corralled, but with some patience and some food, we finally got it comfortable in the spot near where it was spotted,” Davidson said. “We then moved it to a holding facility where we could keep it quarantined from other animals.” MORE NEWS FROM EYEWITNESS NEWS
