Government contractors are producing jobs in the secrecy of a former military installation near Lexington that lawmakers believe is worth investing in.
Some 2,800 people work at Bluegrass Station, which is essentially a guarded industrial park for military contractors. Employees go through a check station to get into the fenced compound where the contractors have set up shop.
Legislative leaders, hoping to get even more military contractors to move in, passed legislation last week to exempt private firms from paying property taxes if they construct buildings on the 700-acre compound.
It's an investment that Gov. Steve Besehar supports, too. A spokeswoman said Beshear intends to sign the legislation into law.
