Winfield Elementary School has received the bronze award in the Healthier US School Challenge.
The school was notified in writing by first lady Michelle Obama on Monday, according to a news release from Putnam County Schools.
The Healthier US School Challenge is part of Michelle Obama’s initiative to eliminate childhood obesity within a generation. She introduced “Let’s Move” in 2010.
The Healthier US School Challenge recognizes schools in the National School Lunch Program that focus on promoting physical activity and healthy eating.
In the spring of 2012, Winfield was awarded $3,000 through the National Dairy Council’s Fuel Up to Play 60 grant. Each Wednesday morning, the school participates in a class movement, such as the Cha-Cha Slide. In grades three through five, student ambassadors design wellness activities for the student body, such as recess games, healthy recipes, Smoothie tastings and healthy eating pledges.
The school also has been able to purchase gaming equipment, kitchen blenders and other items to support this health initiative.
