Out of a roomful of excellent food products, Ashley Cain produces the best of the best. The 2012 Cameron High School graduate has captured the Grand Champion Ham award for the third straight year. F.F.A. organizers say they think it's the first time anyone has accomplished that feat.
"It's always been my goal to win three in a row because I don't know anyone else that's done it," Cain said. "So, it's always been a goal."
But Cain has added to her already impressive resume' with a second never before seen achievement. She also captured the Grand Champion Bacon honor. F.F.A. officials say they think it's the first time anyone has ever carried the ham and bacon categories in the same year.
"It's a lot of work," Cain said. "We raise our hogs for about three years...I mean three months...and then we go and we cut them up and cure them and slice them and its just a lot of patience."
The annual auction is a way to showcase the work of F.F.A. members and gives them a chance to earn a little money for their efforts.
"A point of this organization is really community development," David Chaney, W.Va. F.F.A. president said. "And just to see the community come together here for the members and support them in their supervised agricultural experience programs which members spend countless hours doing, it really helps bring together the community and the students."
"This brings in well over 60-thousand dollars each sale so that's quite a bit of money compared to what you're going to go and you'll pay at the store so it's very important for our members it gives them a chance to earn money for their degrees and such," Kyle Kidwell, W.Va. F.F.A. Vice President said.
Over the past two years, Cain has made more than 16-thousand dollars from her prize-winning hams. She says the winnings have paid for her education at Potomac State.
