West Virginia state troopers have arrested a father and stepmother on a felony child neglect charge.
The arrest came as the result of a two-year investigation after the man's 11-year-old daughter became pregnant.
West Virginia State Police arrested Michael and Amanda Adkins. Michael is the biological father and Amanda is the stepmother. They are charged with child neglect creating risk of injury.
Troopers began investigating after the couple’s daughter became pregnant.
Sometime into the investigation, the couple told troopers their daughter had miscarried, when, in fact, she had an abortion, State Police said. A few weeks later, she underwent an unnecessary medical procedure.
A trooper with the Crimes Against Children unit said the procedure was unnecessary, because doctors did not know she already had an abortion.
State Police said the couple lied to them, which is the basis of the child neglect charges.
Troopers are still looking into the circumstances of how the girl became pregnant.
The couple was being held in the Western Regional Jail on a $20,000 bond.
