Many people in Kanawha County saw their property taxes go up this year, but now the state government is looking at ways to fix the problem.
And the answer they're coming up with is to explore bipartisan property tax reform.
A rally took place at the capitol Wednesday as dozens of people came out to protest higher property taxes.
Right now, there are a total of four bills awaiting approval. The bills’ backers hope they will help fix the current tax problem and help alleviate some of the burden felt by property owners. Those bills include tax caps, self-appraisals and protection for senior citizens living on a set income.
The house passed a bill that would give people more time to protest tax appraisal, and lawmakers said that's a good sign.
Although a lot of people living in Kanawha County were victims to the property tax increase, the reform would impact the whole state.
