An evil dragon steals a mountain home and a fantastic treasure, spurring a heroic band of dwarfs to recover what they've lost. They're joined by a wizard and a hobbit on a perilous trek through Middle Earth where they encounter trolls, goblins, elves and spiders. "I read it the first time in junior high school. Loved it, fell in love with it," Timothy Mace, the director said. "And this play is the only one that Mr. Tolkien himself approved of before his death. It was the only one that he actually put his signature on said this is an approved version. And it's written specifically for children to perform." For Children's Theatre of Charleston, "The Hobbit: A Musical Adventure" presents a rare opportunity to perform a full length, two-act production. "This is a two hour show," Mace said. "We have young actors who are stretching their vocal talents and their stamina. And I just think the audiences will be thrilled to see the creativity and the talent in these young people." A cast of dozens brings J.R.R. Tolkien's classic to life, with costumes and makeup which look like they're right out of the movies. "To get the voice and stuff I've had to change my voice up a lot of different ways," Timmy Walker, who plays "Gollum" said. "And I keep on adding things, keep on doing that. So yeah, it takes a lot of dedication and stuff to get into character." The story consists of the trip from Bilbo Baggins' home to the Lonely Mountain where Smaug the Dragon hoards his stolen treasure. It's punctuated by scenes featuring familiar characters and brand new songs. "My favorite part has been the music," Josh Brennan, who plays "Gandalf the Grey" said. "We have a full, we have an orchestra that does the songs for us, led by Mark Scarpelli and it's really amazing music."
