U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller was honored by the YMCA for his efforts to prevent diabetes in seniors and low-income families.
The West Virginia Democrat was named a “YMCA Congressional Champion” for his efforts to advance prevention programs.
Rockefeller reintroduced a bill to make more West Virginians eligible for preventive diabetes care, according to a news release from his office.
“Reducing diabetes in West Virginia is imperative,” the West Virginia Democrat said in a news release. “This bill would use a proven diabetes prevention program to help reduce the prevalence of this disease, and in many cases, help West Virginians avoid it altogether. It also saves billions of dollars as we try to reduce the federal deficit, and it creates jobs by training more workers in the state to implement this program.”
The legislation would provide Medicare beneficiaries with access to the National Diabetes Prevention Program, which focuses on healthy eating and physical activity.
Rockefeller said the bill would save the Medicaid program billions by allowing individuals to take part in a proven preventive program.
