Boone County commissioners have been checking on finances from their area's volunteer fire departments to make sure everything is above board.
Money problems with the Institute Volunteer Fire Department and questions concerning the bookkeeping practices of the Chesapeake Volunteer Fire Department have put the issue on the front burner.
Boone County commissioners said they are unhappy that some of their departments were slow in turning their paperwork. The audit found no discrepancies, however. Still, the county wants the firefighters to be more timely with their reports.
"They are willing to take action with withholding levee money from those departments if the paperwork is not in order and requiring them to actually come to the county on specific items and ask that that money be dispersed instead of them just getting a check every month to use at their discretion," said Justin Marlowe, Boone County assistant prosecutor.
The Racine Volunteer Fire Department still has not turned in its paperwork. County commissioners said they want a look at those books as soon as possible.
