A Hinton native’s nomination by President Barack Obama to the position of director of the White House Office of Management and Budget is drawing praise back home.
Sylvia Mathews Burwell has been tapped for the honor. Burwell previously has served as the president of the Walmart Foundation and president of the Global Development Program of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin said in a news release that Burwell continues to show the world “her true West Virginia spirit.”
“Her education, combined with her life experiences growing up in West Virginia, has led her to, yet again, another amazing career achievement,” Tomblin said. “We're so very proud of Sylvia and wish her the best in her new role as director of the Office of Management and Budget."
A Rhodes Scholar, Burwell has degrees from Harvard and Oxford.
