After some candid meetings with the new organizers of MultiFest, the top elected leaders in Kanawha County and the city of Charleston have expressed their support for the reformed organization as it prepares to continue MultiFest this August. In a joint news release from the city and county, County Commission President Kent Carper said the commission will discuss funding for the event at its next meeting on March 12 as Commissioner Hoppy Shores has asked that the matter be placed on the agenda. Meanwhile, Charleston Mayor Danny Jones said he will provide an update to City Council members Monday night and request $15,000 to support this year's festival. Carper said the new board of directors for MultiFest has promised to be more forthcoming with their financial information and more transparent in making sure money that is collected for the event is spent on the event. "The board has taken several steps to ensure financial integrity of the organization and a reformed openness to the public and private sponsors that provide money to support it,” Carper said. Jones said the city budget has included a $12,500 line item for MultiFest over the past several years, but because of the uncertainty over the event in recent months, the budget we submitted to City Council last month does not include that funding. "I will be talking with City Council members about designating $15,000 so MultiFest can continue uninterrupted this August," Jones said. Carper has invited the newly constituted board to hold its meetings in the Old Courthouse Building if it needs a place to meet. Jones said the city will also continue to provide police officers and EMTs during the event and assistance from other departments involved in setting up before and cleaning up after each of the three days at the Capitol Complex. Jones said he has always enjoy taking his sons to MultiFest, “especially on Sunday afternoon, when it's a great reunion of old friends and people who have been involved in the fabric of our community for a long time. I am pleased that the next chapter of this event with new leadership will begin this year." Commissioner Dave Hardy said he believes the MultiFest board is moving in the right direction. “I believe the event can once again be successful," Hardy said. MORE NEWS FROM EYEWITNESS NEWS
