State preservation officials are questioning Mount Hope's plan to tear down a historic old school.
The two-story brick building is located in the Fayette County city's historic district. The State Historic Preservation Office says the building is a contributing resource to the district and its demolition would have a negative effect.
The building was constructed in the 1920s. It was condemned after a fire in 2006.
Mayor Michael Martin told The Register-Herald that he doesn't want to jeopardize the historic district. But he said several of the district's roughly 100 contributing buildings already are lost.
He says consultants are preparing a response to the preservation office's concerns.
