A federal appeals panel has upheld the capital sentence of a West Virginia man who was the triggerman in a hired killing of a sailor in Virginia.
The three judges of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday rejected David Anthony Runyon's appeal of his conviction in 2007 murder-for-hire shooting of Ensign Cory Allen Voss in Newport News. Runyon appealed his capital murder conviction and sentencing on various grounds.
Runyon was hired by Catherina Voss and her lover to kill Voss' husband so they could be together and collect $500,000 in insurance money. They were sentenced to life in prison.
Runyon purchased the handgun he used to kill Voss in Morgantown, W.Va., where he lived. Cory Voss was found dead in his pickup truck in Newport News.
