West Virginia's black bear hunting season would be expanded in more than a dozen counties under changes proposed by the Division of Natural Resources.
Hunting bears with firearms in these counties is currently restricted to December.
The DNR is proposing allowing hunters to hunt bears with firearms during the 12-day firearm season for deer in late-November. But the number of permits would be limited to prevent hunters from killing too many bears.
The affected counties are Barbour, Braxton, Clay, Grant, Greenbrier, Hardy, Lewis, Mercer, Mineral, Monroe, Nicholas, Pendleton, Pocahontas, Randolph, Summers, Taylor, Tucker, Upshur and Webster.
The Charleston Gazette reports that DNR biologists presented the proposed regulation changes to the state Natural Resources Commission on Sunday. The commission is expected to vote on the proposed changes in April.
