When a logging truck flipped and lost its load earlier this week on Interstate 64 coming into Charleston, traffic was tied up for hours. This is not the first time the curve between the Oakwood and Virginia Street exits has literally thrown motorists a curve ball. “It’s not a great turn by any means, but we do have signs,” said Brent Walker, communications director for the West Virginia Department of Transportation. Walker said Friday that the area has eastbound and westbound signs with the titled truck symbol and signs with large arrows in both directions that warn drivers as they enter the turn. Despite the signage, Walker said, there are a lot of accidents on the stretch of road. “We think the majority of those accidents are the result of excessive speed,” he said. State highways officials do evaluate accidents to determine if there are ways to make roads safer to travel. He said the state also partners with the city to make the stretch of highway a targeted enforcement area. When asked whether the agency would consider putting an Amber Alert-type sign with a warning message about the curve, Walker said the state could put 20 signs out there and they wouldn’t necessarily “keep a traveler from having an accident.” Walker said excessive speed really is the issue and the turn can be negotiated by motorists if they just use caution. The posted speed limit in both directions is 50 mph. “Ultimately, it needs to be the traveling public to slow down when you see those arrows and those tiled truck signs,” he said.
