The controversial topic of redistricting was on the agenda Thursday at the Kanawha County Board of Education meeting. The battle of the borders started in August, when parents of Overbrook Elementary students came to the board asking for help because they said the school was simply overbooked. Overcrowding became a problem for the South Hills school, and parents were looking for help from the board. Redistricting was the answer then, but Thursday night, it was another story. The board presented three different scenarios to fix the problems, including moving students around between Overbrook, Westside Mary C. Snow, Flinn and other elementary schools. Parents said redistricting is not the answer, but making more classroom space available is. No decision was reached Thursday night, but this is the first step for the process in redistricting. The board will meet again before making a final decision. The Kanawha County Board of Education will be talking about the possibility of redistricting for two major cities at a meeting Thursday. New lines could be drawn up for Charleston and South Charleston, leaving the question of school districting up in the air. In the past, overcrowding has been a problem for South Hills schools, including John Adams Middle School and George Washington High School. South Charleston Mayor Frank Mullens has said in the past he wanted to help relieve the problem by redrawing district lines so South Charleston High could accept students who would normally go to George Washington.
