A fourth business has been announced to reside in the Melody Mountain shopping complex in Ashland. Kohl's department store is expected to join the complex sometime in 2014. PetSmart, Dick's Sporting Goods and Shogun Japanese Hibachi will be added this year. City Manager Kevin Gunderson expects the development at Melody Mountain will bring about 300 new jobs to the area. Business is booming for parts of Boyd County. Crews are clearing the way on Melody Mountain this week to start construction on three big stores, including PetSmart and Dick's Sporting Goods. Shogun will open down the hill in just a few months. "It's a good thing to see that job opportunities are coming in for people," said Bob Hammond, director of business for the Ashland Alliance. He says it's great to see more businesses coming into the Ashland area and hopes the trend continues. "We've got really good access here with our river, rail and highways access and so forth and just continuously looking for opportunities to continue the growth." Another possible area for growth is the river. City commissioners will meet Thursday to talk about plans to have a floating restaurant on the riverfront. Mayor Chuck Charles said, "There is excitement because it is something different. We want to look at everything." Star of Louisville is looking to dock a boat permanently at the Port of Ashland. Charles said the riverfront is wide open. "We're open for business, so we're ready to negotiate," he said. He said it could bring an economic impact, not only from the citizens from Ashland, but from other areas. "You know, there's a huge boating community out there that would give them an opportunity a place a reason to stop in Ashland, to have dinner and maybe get off the boat and walk downtown." A tenant for the third space on Melody Mountain is expected to be announced next week. MORE NEWS FROM EYEWITNESS NEWS
