MultiFest, the Charleston festival that has been rocked by a scandal involving a former festival official and the resignation of her husband, will have a town hall informational meeting to discuss the future of the organization.
The meeting is set for 7 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, 423 Shrewsbury St. Festival officials are encouraging all sponsors and supporters to attend.
MultiFest has faced a series of controversies. Deborah Starks, a former treasurer of the nonprofit organization, pleaded guilty to federal tax fraud. She acknowledged that she had drained more than $300,000 from the festival. Her husband, Stephen Starks, who was not charged in the case, recently resigned from the festival, citing sponsorship concerns. He is the founder of the multicultural festival and was the president.
MultiFest draws thousands of visitors to the state Capitol during the summer for music, food and entertainment that celebrates the area’s cultural diversity.
