Ironton , Lawrence County , Ohio
The fate of a historic landmark in Ironton is still uncertain.
Memorial Hall on 4th Street and Railroad Avenue in downtown Ironton is on the National Register of Historic Places, and the city is hoping someone will soon show interest in saving the building.
George Sharp has lived in Ironton for many years, and seen the Hall flourish. "I'd like to see them doing something to it. Make it good for the community other than let it just stand there and rot and fall down."
The city's finance committee continues to meet to talk about what could be done with the building or the property, and folks in Ironton have mixed opinions on what should happen.
Linda Hall said, "I don't know if they should tear it down or they should fix it like they were going to." She said she could see either one happen.
If the decision is made to tear it down, it will cost upwards of $300,000 to demolish. Since it's on the historic register, there are some tax incentives to develop the 20,000 square feet of space.
Hall said, "It would be nice if they could something with the veterans."
It's been called a blank slate that could be turned into anything from residential property to light industrial or even a museum, but if it's not fixed up in the next year or two, it could be too late. "Eventually in time it will fall down if they don't keep the structure upgraded," said Sharp.
The committee is expected to continue discussions on the topic, Anyone interested in the building or property can contact the city of Ironton.
