West Virginia State Police are still trying to piece together a shooting that took place Sunday morning near Mineral City in Logan County.
Police were called to a residence on WV Route 10 around 11:40 a.m. for what they believed to be a possible home invasion or burglary. When they arrived, they found George Michael Bowens, 35, dead from a gunshot wound.
Bowens was at the residence of his estranged girlfriend, Venus Parton, and police realized they were dealing with more of a domestic situation, Trooper J.K. Harris said.
Parton had gone outside the home and neighbors called police for her. She is claiming self-defense and admits to shooting Bowens, Harris said. Police are investigating to corroborate her statements or to find out if there is any evidence to contradict them.
At this point, police are questioning Parton and anyone with information about their relationship, Harris said.
