Putnam County residents have been the latest victims of car break-ins.
Winfield has become the latest hot spot for a few car burglars, and now neighborhoods are on high alert.
“My daughter lives next door so we alert each other. We keep our eyes peeled," said Connie Lewis of Winfield.
It’s top priority for Lewis and others who live in her neighborhood to keep their eyes on their cars.
In just the past week, police say nine cars have been burglarized.
The break-ins took place in the Winfield Avenue, Joshua Way, Cash Lane, Riverdale Estates, and West End Estates sections of the Winfield area.
Most of the break-ins happened at night, when folks in these little communities are sleeping.
Police said thieves are taking purses, credit cards, iPods, and cell phones
It's a new string of crime Lewis said she and her neighbors never had to deal with before.
"I've lived here all my life. Just in the last three or four years, it's been getting worse," Lewis said.
"It was about this time last year, we had some of the same things up there, and it kind of died down until it's just hit again,” said Winfield Mayor Randy Barrett. “They've been at both ends of the city. So it's more isolated in one place, but we have a couple on the other end, too."
Police said they have suspects in mind, after purchases were made with one of the stolen cards at the Nitro Walmart and a Cross Lanes Speedway.
As the suspects remained on the loose, Barrett said he wants Winfield residents to be on guard.
"I would advise lock your car,” Barrett said. “If you don't lock your cars, at least take everything out of your car."
Anyone with information that could help catch the suspects is urged to call Winfield police.
