A longtime West Virginia educator has filed the lawsuit she threatened over her firing as state schools superintendent.
Jorea Marple sued the state Board of Education on Friday in Kanawha County Circuit Court.
Marple alleges she was denied due process when she was abruptly fired during a November board meeting. The lawsuit also says the dismissal's handling has wrongly damaged her reputation.
Following the firing, the board referred to lagging student performance and a desire to head in a new direction with new leadership. But the board also said it was not assigning blame for the state's poor education rankings.
Two board members, Priscilla Haden and Jenny Phillips, resigned to protest Marple's firing. The state Supreme Court earlier rejected a petition filed by two school parents seeking to undo her dismissal.
