A new poll on several political issues in the Mountain State shows the majority of West Virginians are against President Barack Obama's proposals on guns and energy. The poll also looked at a potential Democratic matchup for U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller's seat. Mark Blankenship Enterprises conducted the survey of 610 voters in West Virginia at the beginning of February. When asked about Obama's gun control proposals, 56 percent of those polled said Sens. Rockefeller and Joe Manchin should vote against the proposals, while 36 percent said they should vote for the proposals. When it comes to the president's energy policies regarding an increase of taxes on energy companies in the United States, 55 percent voters said the U.S. senators should vote against the proposal while 37 percent believe the senators should vote the proposals down. Congressman Nick Joe Rahall appears to be the front-runner on the Democratic side for Rockefeller's seat. The primary is still more than a year away and no one on the Democratic side has officially announced their candidacy, but the poll asked about Rahall, Supreme Court Justice Robin Davis, former U.S. Sen. Carte Goodwin and attorney Ralph Baxter. The poll found 37 percent would vote for Rahall, 16 percent for Davis, 6 percent for Goodwin and 2 percent for Baxter. More than a third of voters said they were undecided. The poll also asked about job approval. Seventy percent said they believe Manchin is doing a good job. Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin received a 69 percent job approval rating and Congresswoman Shelley Moore Captio received a 63 percent approval rating.
