It can be as simple as a smile, or holding the door open for someone. They're called random acts of kindness, and students at Our Lady of Fatima parish school in Huntington got inspired after the tragic school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut to want to do something to honor the 26 victims.

Sixth grader Allison Reilly said, "Every day I pick a person for 26 days to be nice to especially."

Classmate Noah Haikal added, "It's just easy to do and anyone can do it. It's just the right thing and it's very nice."

Their teacher, Cindy Westbrook, encouraged them to get involved with the acts of kindness. "I think it's really important for them to see very young that they can make a difference in the world around them," she said.

The students are doing acts of kindness to get neon green ribbons. "They're green because that's Sandy Hook in Connecticut's colors and they're neon to kind of light up the world with kindness," explained Haikal.

The idea is to pay it forward. Westbrook said, "Hopefully that person will wear it and go on throughout their day and see someone else being kind and pass it on to that person and we're hoping our kindness will reach out into the community."

They're hoping those random acts go on well past the end of the week. Reilly said,
"It shows you're honoring the people in Connecticut. It's just the right thing to do for others and you should be kind to anybody even if it wasn't for that you should just be kind."

You can follow us on Twitter: @DarrahWCHS and @WCHS_WVAH and use #26acts or #rakweek to tell us about your random acts of kindness this week.
