Pope Benedict, 85, will step down on February 28, according to a Vatican spokesperson.
The spokesperson would not give a reason for the resignation.
According to The Times, Pope Benedict will resign because of ill health and old age.
This is the first resignation in almost 600 years.
Pope Benedict is the 265th pope.
According to CNN, he is the sixth German to serve as pope and the first since the 11th Century. He became pope in 2005.
