We have an update on a child that investigators believe died from Shaken Baby Syndrome in Fairdale. The child's stepfather, James Green, has been released from the hospital and charged with murder. The child's mother, Brandy Smallwood, has been charged with child neglect creating risk of injury. Both are currently in the Southern Regional Jail. Troopers responded to a call that a two-year-old child fell from a window of a trailer. When they arrived on the scene, Green had carried the child to a neighbors house and allegedly said he was going to commit suicide. Troopers found him unresponsive in his house from an apparent drug overdose. The child was taken to CAMC hospital where he died around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. Police say a preliminary investigation indicates the child was a victim of Shaken Baby Syndrome. Troopers say an additional child was in the home and appears as if he was abused as well. That child is now in the custody of child protective services. Stay tuned to Eyewitness News for more information. West Virginia State Police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old child in Fairdale. According to a news release, two troopers from the Beckley detachment responded Friday night to a 911 call that the child had fallen from the window of a house trailer. When troopers arrived, the child had been carried to a neighbor's house by the child's stepfather. He was found unresponsive from an apparent drug overdose. The child was taken to a hospital where the toddler died early Saturday. A preliminary investigation indicates the child died from shaking, not from a fall from the window. No arrest has been made. The 23-year-old stepfather was also hospitalized. “Copyright 2013 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
