A Charleston man pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Kanawha Circuit Court in connection with the alleged rape of a woman on railroad tracks in Kanawha City.
Erique Harris, 20, pleaded not guilty to seven counts – three counts of first-degree sexual assault, two counts of malicious wounding and two counts of assault during the commission of a felony. Harris is charged in connection with the alleged attack of a woman in November 2012. The woman told police that Harris stabbed her and forced her on railroad tracks, where she said he repeatedly raped her.
The woman told Eyewitness News she was able to call 911 with a cell phone she had in her back pocket. Police said the move may have saved her life. When she put the phone back in her pocket, she was still connected with Metro 911. Metro 911 dispatchers took the latitude and longitude from the cell phone and got the woman’s general location. But they took it one step further and called the cell phone company and were able to find her exact location on the railroad tracks.
In court Wednesday, Circuit Judge Jennifer Bailey said a possible trial date was 9 am. April 15. She denied Harris’ request to lower his $100,000 cash bond. The judge also said that if he is able to come up with his bond, he would be placed on home confinement.
