Gary Taylor is the Director of Public Works in Charleston and says his men had a busy Saturday afternoon. "Our trucks hit the ground around twelve thirty. The salt is working, the temperatures have come up a lot since this morning."
As busy as road crews were Saturday afternoon, tackling the roads, there were still weather related crashes. Dispatchers reported more than three dozen wrecks since noon including one on Little Sandy Creek Road near Elkview where an SUV slid and rolled over on it's side. Fortunately nobody was hurt. Another car slid into a house in Dunbar. It happened in the 200 block of Roxalana Road around four o'clock. The driver couldn't get her mini van to stop on the slick roads and ended up going through a fence, hitting the back of the house.
Since most crashes happen while care are traveling up or down hill, Gary Taylor says those roads are top priority. "We try to get the main arteries going up hills and anything around hospitals and of course if it's a week day and school is in. We'll go after that and the bus routes. We stay on hills and take the hills first. We don't do a lot on flatlands just have to our emphasis where it's the most dangerous situation are."
