Parkersburg police are searching for some thieves who used a rather unusual method to withdraw money – they hooked up a chain to an automatic teller machine and pulled it away with a vehicle.
The incident occurred about 2:30 a.m. Thursday at the Certified gas station on Dupont Road in south Parkersburg, according to a news release from the Parkersburg Police Department.
Police said a review of video surveillance shows that a vehicle, possibly a sport utility vehicle, backed up to the front doors of the store. Multiple suspects entered the store after the glass was shattered. A chain was wrapped around the ATM, and the machine was pulled loose by the vehicle. Police said the suspects loaded the ATM into the vehicle and left the area, possibly on Route 95.
A time stamp on the surveillance footage showed the thieves worked fast, completing the crime in less than two minutes.
Officers gathered evidence at the scene, and detectives are investigating the incident. The surveillance footage is being analyzed. Extensive damage was done to the front of the store. Police are not releasing the amount of money taken at this time.
It appears at least one vehicle drove by the store while the crime was in progress. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective J.M. Stalnaker or any member of the Parkersburg Police Department at 304-424-8444. Anonymous tips can also be left at www.parkersburgpolice.com.
