The snow dumped on the region roads closed multiple school systems Friday and created icy driving conditions on roadways.
Multiple school systems were closed after 3 to 6 inches of snow blanketed the region. County school systems closed included Kanawha, Cabell, Boone, Braxton, Lincoln, Logan, Mason and Mingo counties. For a complete list of school closings, click on the school closing banner at wchstv.com.
Meanwhile, drivers were being urged to use caution when traveling Friday and to be on the lookout for black ice and slick spots. Interstate 77 southbound slow and fast lanes near the Westmoreland exit were shut down for a period this morning due to a wreck and icy conditions. Early this morning, Interstate 77 northbound near Edens Fork was closed because of treacherous conditions. A Kanawha County Metro 911 dispatcher said Interstate 79 near the Clay County-Braxton County line also was closed for a period.
Major routes in downtown Charleston such as Greenbrier, Capitol and Court streets were clear, but side roads were slippery.
