Cabell County students could soon be going to school year-round. The first of six public input meetings were held Tuesday night at Huntington Middle School. Parents and members of the community learned about the proposed Balanced Calendar.
The new calendar means students would have 45 days of class then about a three week break, 45 more days of class and another break. There would be a five week summer break at the end of the school year.
Jennifer Reynold has three children in Cabell County Schools and attended the meeting. "For my family, I'd prefer not to have the balanced calendar. We have a lot of extended family who live outside the area and it would be difficult for me to get my children together with those children because they'll be on different schedules."
The Balanced Calendar has proven to be effective in other districts. Studies have shown children retain information better, which means higher test scores.
Gerri Sawrey is the Assistant Superintendent of School Development and said, "The whole purpose of putting this forward is to look at student achievement across the district."
Five more meetings are scheduled throughout the next two months, the board will vote on based on public input in April.
