In the wake of the tragic house fire in Pike County, Ky., that took the lives of four children and their father on Jan. 9, county officials have started an initiative in hopes of preventing a similar tragedy.
The Kentucky Public Protection Cabinet's Division of Fire Protection announced a partnership between the Pike County Firefighters Association and Kidde Company to distribute smoke detectors to residents. The Kidde Company, based out of North Carolina, provided about 250 smoke detectors. Residents can call their local fire department and a fire fighter will come to their home to properly install it.
Residents can contact the following fire departments for a smoke detector: Belfry, Big Creek, Blackberry, Coal Run, Dorton, Elkhorn City, Feds Creek, Ferrells Creek, Grapevine, Greasy Creek, Gulnare, Hatfield, Hurricane Creek, Island Creek, Johns Creek, Kimper, Lookout Fire and Rescue, Marrowbone, MES Fire and Rescue, Phelps, Pikeville, Shelby Creek Rescue, Shelby Valley, Sycamore, Turkey Creek and Upper Pond Creek.
