An Eastern Panhandle judge will fill a vacant seat in the West Virginia Senate.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin announced Circuit Court Judge Donald H. Cookman's appointment Wednesday night.
Cookman had served as a judge since 1993. He most recently was chief judge of the 22nd Judicial Circuit, which covers Hampshire, Hardy and Pendleton counties. He also was one of three judges appointed last September to serve on the state's new business court.
Cookman replaces Walt Helmick, who won election as agriculture commissioner in November.
