Authorities say the shooting at a Texas community college was the result of an altercation between two people, and at least one was a student.

Harris County Sheriff's Maj. Armando Tello said both people involved in the altercation were wounded and hospitalized. He says a college maintenance man was injured in the crossfire and also taken to a hospital.

Tello said a female who had a student ID also was hospitalized for a medical complication.

The shooting happened before 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Lone Star College System campus about 20 miles north of downtown Houston.

A fight at a Houston college campus today resulted in a shooting that left three people injured and two others in custody, officials said.

Shots were fired on campus of the Lone Star College shortly about 12:30 p.m., causing the campus to go into lockdown and some students to be evacuated, according to police.

Three people were injured in the gunfire, which police say stemmed from a fight that broke out between two men on campus.

Two suspects are now in police custody, according to officials. They have not yet released any details on the suspects' identities.

Two individuals with multiple gunshot wounds are in serious condition at Ben Taub Hospital, according to ABC News affiliate KTRK. The condition and whereabouts of the third injured person was not immediately known.

The campus reopened about an hour and a half after the gunshots.

When the shots were fired, the school told all students to seek "shelter in place" in messages and on their website. Officials evacuated some of the students from campus buildings.

The shooting comes only a month after the massacre at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Conn., in which 20 students and six staff members were shot, sparking a wave of attempted copycat crimes in states like California and Indiana.

The Connecticut shooting inspired calls from government officials including President Obama for stricter gun control laws.

CNN reported Tuesday afternoon that three people – one suspected shooter and two perhaps unintended targets – were wounded in a shooting that appears to have been between two people at the Lone Star College campus in Houston.

School spokesman Jed Young said the wounded suspect is in custody, and the second gunman is on the loose, Young said.

Authorities believe the school is "under control, but the school still is being evacuated," Young said.

Young said he doesn't know the conditions of the wounded.

A law enforcement official says Texas authorities have at least one person in custody in connection to the Lone Star College campus shooting in Houston, and local authorities think there could potentially be a second shooter.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss an ongoing case. The official said multiple injuries have been reported.

The Houston-area community college is on lockdown amid reports of a shooter on campus. Lone Star College System issued an alert on its website telling students and faculty to take immediate shelter or avoid the campus.

A college campus in Texas is on lockdown amid reports of a shooter on campus.

Lone Star College System issued an alert on its website Tuesday telling students and faculty on its Houston-area campus in north Harris County to take immediate shelter or avoid the campus.

Spokesman Jed Young says there are reports of a shooter.

Aerial footage from local television stations shows emergency personnel attending to some people on stretchers and at least one being taken into an ambulance. Others can be seen running from a building led by officers.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office says it has no immediate details.

CNN reported Tuesday afternoon that students at a Lone Star College campus in Houston have been asked to take shelter after reports of a gunman on campus, a school spokesman said.

Footage from KPRC showed a large number of law enforcement personnel on campus, and at least two people being wheeled on gurneys toward ambulances.

More than 10,000 students are at the North Harris campus of Lone Star College, spokesman Jed Young said.
