Two water buffalo that had been hanging out on a Jackson County farm were hauled away by West Virginia Department of Agriculture officials so the animals could be quarantined and evaluated for diseases.

Buddy Davidson, spokesman for the Department of Agriculture, said the buffalo were picked up and transported Wednesday. He said he hoped to have more information next week about what the agency would do with the animals depending upon their health and test results.

Affectionately named by residents as Millie and Gus, the buffalo appeared to be a 1,500-pound, domestic, water buffalo that has been seen accompanied by her calf.

The animals kept showing up in Evans in the yard of Mildred McIntyre, 93, who said she enjoyed watching them even though she had to chase them away by rattling a garbage can lid on occasion. She was concerned that someone would shoot the animals. Her daughter-in-law, Sibyl McIntyre, said she believes the buffalo wandered off from an old game farm near the Mason County line.

The water buffalo are apparently still roaming in Jackson County, but the state Department of Agriculture wants to find them a home.

"We do want to find, contain, test and relocate the animals," agency spokesman Buddy Davidson said Tuesday.

At least two water buffaloes began showing up in the yard of a residence in Evans owned by a 93-year-old woman. The adult animal appears to be a 1,500 pound, maybe domestic, water buffalo that has been seen accompanied by her calf.

Davidson said the agency does not want to take ownership of the animals, but it wants to find them so they can be tested to see if they have any diseases. The animals would then be relocated to another area.
