Flatwoods , Greenup County , Kentucky

It's been a dry county for more than 50 years, but the people of Greenup County Kentucky headed to the polls Tuesday to vote for or against alcohol sales. According to County Clerk's Office, the people of Greenup County voted 4,872 against the sale of alcohol, 3,830 for it.

Barry Grimm voted for the new law and said, "I don't see any reason why it shouldn't go wet. Russel's been wet for a while and I haven't seen any problems or even in Ashland."

Nathan Roark says he'd like to see the County go wet for the sake of economic development, in particular nice restaurants that normally sell alcohol. "We got the Texas Roadhouse and Applebee's in Ashland, thirty years ago Ashland was a dry city, so maybe this is the first step in building up Greenup," said Roark.

But others fear a wet county means an increase in violent crimes and D.U.I.'s and not a big boon to the local economy. Angelina Hamilton said, "I voted no because I'm a Christian and it won't bring a lot of money to our town. Ironton isn't a booming town or even Portsmouth, it's not booming."

While some say the quality of life will diminish if Greenup County goes wet, others say it's worth taking a chance for the county's financial future.

Now, the people have spoken, and there will only be limited sales of alcohol in private establishments.

Voters in one part of Kentucky were casting their vote Tuesday to decide whether or not alcohol would be sold countywide.

Greenup County, Ky., has been a dry county for more than 50 years, but that could change with the outcome of Tuesday's vote.

This is a special election as only 1,600 signatures were needed on a petition for people to vote, and it received more than 2,000. Poll workers said there had been a pretty good turnout at midday.

The polls close at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Keep checking wchstv.com for updates and watch Eyewitness News tonight for the complete story.
